Ophthalpreneurs 2024: the missing part

The missing part of the equation on how to engage the patients to the eye surgery is.. the patient.

Let me share with you my findings, I was presented at Ophthalpreneurs 2024 conference in March 2024, in Stresa, Milano, Italy during Ophthalpreneurs2024.

In my presentation, I delved into the evolution of Ukrainian ophthalmology and highlighted the importance of understanding patient needs in today's technologically advanced landscape. With a growing number of IOL options available, it's crucial for surgeons to focus on personalized patient care.

My research, involving thousands of patients worldwide, revealed that:

  • The majority of patients seeking eye surgery are between 40 and 70 years old.

  • While many desire spectacle independence, a significant portion are open to using reading glasses.

  • Night vision and halo concerns are major factors influencing patient decisions.

  • Many patients are willing to invest in premium IOLs for optimal results.

  • Online resources like "Dr. Google" significantly shape patient expectations, often leading to misinformation or unrealistic hopes.

To bridge the gap between patient desires and surgeon offerings, I suggest:

  • Actively listening to patients and understanding their daily visual needs and expectations.

  • Avoiding technical jargon and focusing on relatable explanations.

  • Utilizing patient education tools to clarify the benefits and drawbacks of different IOL options.

  • Being transparent about potential outcomes and setting realistic expectations.

  • Recognizing that the patient journey begins long before they enter the clinic and extends beyond the surgery itself.

  • Building trust and rapport with patients through empathy, clear communication, and genuine care.

By adopting a patient-centric approach and tailoring communication strategies, ophthalmologists can empower patients to make informed decisions and achieve satisfying surgical outcomes.

The key takeaway is clear: we need a paradigm shift in patient education. As a leading expert in ophthalmic surgery and patient communication, I am dedicated to helping surgeons navigate this evolving landscape. My unique resources and insights can equip you with the tools to connect with patients on a deeper level, address their concerns effectively, and ultimately deliver personalized care that exceeds expectations.

Join me on this journey to revolutionize patient education and elevate the standard of care in ophthalmology.
